Individually we give, collectively we transform

We anticipate it each year: that fresh start in January when we turn the page and take a moment to look inward. As you do that this month, join me in not being distracted by the noise around us—a world at times enamored by who is doing what and where.

Join me in pausing, and taking a look at what is happening within your arms reach each day.

Former First Lady Barbara Bush once said, “Your success as a family... our success as a nation... depends not on what happens inside the White House, but on what happens inside your house.”

I was reminded of that quote last month as we mourned the passing of President George H.W. Bush. That quote is a poignant reminder that the individual actions you take, whether they are recognized or celebrated, make a difference.

The way you daily live your life—with integrity and kindness—has a ripple effect on those around you, the people around those people, and on and on.

Your success as a family... our success as a nation... depends not on what happens inside the White House, but on what happens inside your house.
— Barbara Bush, First Lady

More than the laws that govern us, or the constant wax and wane of shifting political parties in power, we—you and me—can move mountains when we focus on what is in our power to change.

I think of a group of local business leaders who met with a group of African American boys recently for lunch. The Embrace Race luncheon challenged participants to look past traditional stereotypes and make connections for the future. Each of those business leaders, and each of those boys, will now have the opportunity to walk out what they have learned in their own circle of influence.

I think of the volunteers who, year after year, work to keep the Kings Harvest Ministries winter shelter open. I think of the donors who gave to the Community Impact Fund, allowing us to provide an emergency grant to help keep those shelter doors open this year.

Every hour invested was important.

Every dollar needed.

Individually we give, collectively we transform.

The standards for generosity set at a local, regional, national and international level are never as persuasive or as powerful as what you do in your own home and this community. I hope your vision of the New Year includes giving—of your time, your resources and the very best of yourself.
