Qualified Charitable Distributions
Called a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), IRA owners aged 70 ½ and over have the unique option of making a tax-free contribution each year to registered nonprofit organizations. They can also make a one-time election to fund a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust.
The yearly limits for these contributions may change over time, but the opportunity for tax benefits remains. And, because QCD gifts can be distributed to any registered 501(c)(3), contributions can stay local.
These transfers, known as qualified charitable distributions or QCDs, offer eligible older Americans a great way to easily give to charity before the end of the year. And, for those who are at least 73 years old, QCDs count toward the IRA owner's required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year.
“My husband owned a small business in Mount Carroll since 1968. Using my IRA to contribute directly to the Mount Carroll Community Impact Fund lets me give back to the community we love so much.”
— Mary Ann Hutchison, chairperson of the Mount Carroll Community Foundation, a Geographic Affiliate of the Quad Cities Community Foundation
